Product Update: BaseEscape

Friday, August 27th, 2010

BaseEscape is a tool that we developed in order to facilitate smooth transfer of your data from your Basecamp account to DeskAway. Below are the fixes and updates we carried out this week from the feedback we recieved from users.

1. Error checking to see if the imported xml file is valid.

2. Fixed a caching issue that would not allow users to upload the xml file if an error was found while parsing the file.

3. Basecamp retains data in their system (which is available in your exported xml file) for deleted users - time sheet entries, messages, milestones and/or task lists. BaseEscape is now importing this data and will disable the deleted user in your DeskAway account. This way you will know what milestone was assigned to Rita, who no longer can access the system.

4. Fix div tag displays after importing.

5. Better error messages to help you understand why your import didn’t work.

6. Fixing of milestone progress status which somtimes showed “(0% complete: 0/0 Task, 0/0 Issue)”.

7. Free plans cannot see the BaseEscape link. BaseEscape is only allowed for Personal, Professional, Plus or Power plans.

8. Some other small bugs and fixes.

We have very excited to announce the integration of DeskAway into the Google Apps Marketplace™, Google’s online storefront for Google Apps™ products and services. DeskAway will join a diverse group of applications/tools and will now be available for direct signup by all Google Apps™ users and customers. Read the official Google announcement here.

We think that cloud computing and web-based applications are the future of enterprise software and integrating with Google Apps is an excellent move forward.

The Google Apps Marketplace makes it easy for more than 2 million Google Apps customers to discover, purchase and deploy integrated business applications and related professional services. By integrating with user account and application data stored in Google Apps, these cloud applications provide a simpler user experience, increase business efficiency, and reduce administrative overhead. To learn more, visit google.com/appsmarketplace.

Here is what we really love about the Marketplace:

1. Existing Google Apps users can easily setup and integrate 3rd party applications
2. As a vendor, it was easy for us to complete the integration as the resources and online help provider by Google was more than excellent.
3. We are current users and fans of Google Apps
4. We got to interact and work with the amazing team at Google - technical as well as marketing!

The DeskAway and Google App integration is really simple and takes not more than a few minutes. Once integrated, Google Apps users will seamlessly be able to access all their project communication without having to sign into DeskAway through a separate browser every time. Google is making it easier for small businesses to leverage the best of the web’s applications to power their business with the least amount of IT setup and overheads. We are very excited to be a part of this movement.

Designer’s Diary - The thought process behind the new logo

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

We met at a Barista cafe where I was expecting another self-bragging client who would ask me conjure up a logo that is already in his mind. But when I met I Sahil that day, I realized that designing the logo for him is going to be different because he was ready to give me the space to present something different and out of the box. That is the way I like to work!

The brief I had to work with was, “I want it to convey a sense of freedom, happiness when DeskAway simplifies teamwork. Something like a work-life balance.”

That night (well, being a designer, my mind works better at night!) I thought about the name “DeskAway” which seemed to be very graphic by itself. What came to my head first was some office desk that is now broken because it is no more needed. But as a rule of thumb, the thought that comes to me first, is not worth deliberating upon because any random brain can come up with the 1st thought! I knew I had to think much deeper. My brain went into the hyper mode. I was flooded with ideas, many weird ones too! Take for example the desk being invisible (a good idea right! Here are some of my other initial, but still very common thoughts…

Let me cut across to 2 nights before presentation. I looked at all the options…they were good, but not OUTSTANDING! They were all in sync with what he expected. That was the exact problem! My ‘touch’ was missing. I wanted to show him not what he wanted to see, but something which he never expected me to come up with! All throughout, I was trying to shoo the ‘desk’ away. I tried breaking it, showing an arrow and even making it fly away. But now I realised that the desk is not to be hanged, in fact, it has to be immortalised because you are not leaving the desk…the desk is following you wherever you go. Now I knew I had hit the bullseye! If you try to get into a designer’s mind you will realise that designers and philosophers are very similar. All they do is look at the world as it is but still interpret and express it in a completely different style!

Now that the desk is ‘away’ with me, I can be anywhere: in the sky, in some scenic place, in a pub, under the sea or even on a beach. So, I decided incorporate all these places in the desk. Presto! The identity was invented!

The identity which would grow and change with time. It will not bind the company to a single symbol but it will be dynamic and fresh, which is exactly what a young company required. Not a ‘logo’ but a ‘holo’.

So it was the D-Day now. I had to present Sahil the options I had prepared.

I personally loved the ‘holo’, but was too nervous to present and recommend it outright. That is why I presented the ‘holo’ last. As a caution, I told him not to freak out after looking at this one as it may look little weird. When he saw it, he stared at it for awhile, his expression not revealing what he was thinking. Suddenly he remarked, “I like it.” Such a huge relief! I was so happy that he took an effort to appreciate and accept something new! Though when I presented it, the ‘holo’ was just an idea.. it clicked pretty well. After tweaking the desk shape and images a little, you can see the product at the top of this page! Sahil was in favour of using the ‘orange and blue’ look that was consistent with the old logo which was made the base logo. The others will change with the situation.
We think it gives a feeling of being ‘elevated, zen like and in control.’

Evolution… The New DeskAway Identity

Evolution

Over the last few months, we have been contemplating an upgrade to our current logo (see above) which was initially designed in 2007 over a cup of coffee, on a MacBook. It was good enough to help us launch DeskAway. Though, recently, we have felt that it does not adequately convey the brand.

We wanted to design a simple logo with a very simple idea - to convey a feeling of freedom, happiness and a zen-like state, when you are in control of your work from anywhere i.e. away from your desk. After working with a designer for over a month, we are proud to have zeroed in on what is to become the new identity for DeskAway.

We have carried out a switch of the old logo throughout the website, application, mobile sites and the affiliate banners. If you see any irregularities please let us know…Have a great weekend!
